The Cat and the Mouse (1934)

British Pathé

Synopsis: Subtitled “Our Version”, this silent newsreel clip shows a long-haired cat and a rat supposedly hanging out together.

Reality Cat: The title card reads “Just two four-legged friends – who might have been enemies … but what an example to the League!” We assume they mean the League of Nations. In truth it’s just a staged shot of a cat and a rat sitting on the same table together.

At first something, possibly a feather, is dangling down from a string in front of the cat’s face, apparently to distract the animal.

The cat then licks the rat, grooming him.

The cat also licks the rat’s tummy. The rat seems happy to oblige.

Final Mewsings: We wonder if the cat planned on having the rat for dinner afterwards?
