by Ted Davis

Original Title: Les sorcières de Salem

Directed by: Raymond Rouleau

Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: In this labored and thinly veiled pro Communist allegory concocted by Jean-Paul Sartre from the Arthur Miller play, the accusations by a group of young girls living in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts are the catalyst for a catastrophic witch-hunt that will enflame the entire town. The talented performers involved in the production include Yves Montand, Mylene Demongeot, Simone Signoret and Michel Piccoli.

Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): During a confrontation with his sane brother James (Michel Piccoli), greedy hypocritical landowner Thomas Putnam (Alfred Adam) pets a handsome tabby cat with measured calmness.

Once the disagreement grows heated, Thomas rises from his chair and tosses the cat brusquely to the floor.

Final Mewsings: Somewhat surprisingly, the tabby cat was not caught up in the witch-hunt.
