Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Based on the original story by Stephen Vincent Benet. New Hampshire farmer Jabez Stone (James Craig) sells his soul to the devil for wealth and relies on politician and lawyer Daniel Webster to save him from damnation.
Kitty Cameo: Late in the film Jabez is throwing a large party in his fancy new home and is anxiously anticipating the guests who are late. Hearing someone arriving, he rushes to the door but it is only his son, Daniel (Lindy Wade) who enters carrying a Bengal striped tabby cat.
Daniel explains to his mother, Mary (Anne Shirley), that the cat was mewing outside his window and he thinks she is sick. Mary suggests the cat may just be hungry and suggests the boy get her something to eat.
Moments later Jabez is showing Miser Stevens (John Qualen) to the fireplace and they find Daniel and the cat sitting there. “That’s no place for a cat,” Jabez complains. Daniel points out that the cat is sick but Jabez makes them move anyway. The cat is not seen or heard of again.
Final Mewsings: Only soul-less people make sick cats move away from fireplaces.
