Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: A series of animated shorts promoting the new series based on the underground classic comic The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers by Gilbert Shelton.
Cartoon Cat: In the series the Freak Brothers, Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek (voiced by Woody Harrelson), Phineas T. Phreakears (voiced by Pete Davidson) and Fat Freddy Freekowtski (voiced by John Goodman) find themselves transported from 1969 to 2020. This is caused by some home-brewed chemical additive created by Phineas.
Finding themselves in 2020, the Freaks are confused, then elated when they spot a marijuana dispensary. Fat Freddy even steps on his cat in the rush that follows.
The Freaks end up tripping over each other as Fat Freddy’s Cat (voiced by Tiffany Hadish) jumps over them and enters via the handy cat door.
Once inside the Freak Brothers are overwhelmed by the sheer amount and variety of weed that surrounds them.
The cashier breaks into a hymnal all about weed and Fat Freddy’s Cat jumps on the organ to play. She also plays the part of the Pope handing out pot wafers.
The song continues until it is revealed the Freak Brothers have been on a major hallucinogenic trip and have wrecked the place, causing the police to be called in to taser them.
In the original comic books Fat Freddy’s Cat was male. The creators of the show wanted to change the cat into a female (which will undoubtedly cut down on the amount of “spray” jokes included in the original comics) and they sometimes refer to the character as just ‘Kitty’.
Final Mewsings: Underground comic cats don’t worry about what sex they are.
