Starring: John Barrymore, Peter Holden, Virginia Weidler
Directed by: Garson Kanin
Synopsis: Educated but alcoholic widower Gregory Vance (John Barrymore) raises his children Donald (Peter Holden) and Joan (Virginia Wiedler) as best he can. His lack of ambition may lead to his children being taken away until an unusual circumstance gives him the opportunity to become a great man.
Kitty Cameo: In the beginning of the movie Vance is at his night watchman job when a Rosebud Product delivery cart pulls up out front. Vance motions for the driver to come in and it turns out that even though the cart acts like a milk cart the only product Rosebud produces is whiskey. The driver offers to drive Vance home. When we see Vance in the passenger seat of the cart he is holding a tabby kitten.
There is no explanation as to why the kitten is riding along in the cart or how it got there. When they pull up to Vance’s home his daughter Joan yells out the window to her father that they need milk. The driver is at a loss until he remembers something and reaches down to pull back a tarp covering a box where he has one bottle of milk stashed.
The problem is the kitten is sitting on top of the box and the driver just brushes him aside, then throws the tarp on top of him and leaves him struggling beneath!
Final Mewsings: Prohibition or not, cats are more important than whiskey!
