Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a straight-laced New York based FBI agent who finds herself teaming up with Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), a brash and foul-mouthed police officer from Boston to catch a drug lord.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): Ashburn, who has trouble forming relationships, is shown at home watching television as she holds and pets an orange tabby cat named Pumpkin.
After a moment a woman’s voice is heard off screen calling for Pumpkin and saying, “Are you at the neighbor’s again?” Ashburn takes Pumpkin to the door and lets him out, saying she’ll see him tomorrow.
Later in the film Mullins breaks into the home where Ashburn is staying in Boston. Ashburn has photos of herself with Pumpkin and Mullins assumes the cat is hers. Ashburn explains Pumpkin’s absence by saying he had run away.
At the end of the film a tag starts after the beginning of the end credits which shows Mullins surprising Ashburn at the door of her new home. Mullins opens a cardboard box and reveals Pumpkin. She says she drove around Ashburn’s old neighborhood and saw the cat sitting in a neighbor’s window so she broke in and took the cat.
Ashburn says she’s happy but it’s clear she’s not and Mullins realizes Pumpkin was never her cat. They put the cat back in the box and Mullins has to go back and put the cat back and struggles with wanting to punch Ashburn.
During the credits a mug shot of Pumpkin and the Mullins’ dog (played by dog actor Samantha) is shown.
Finally the photo of Ashburn holding Pumkpin is the final still seen during the end credits. The animal actors were provided by Dawn Animal Agency and the cat actors were trained by Babette Corelli.
Final Mewsings: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s cat.
