Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: An American interior decorator named Margaret Walsh (Katharine Ross) is surprised when she receives a check for $50,000 for a job in England from an unknown source. Curious, she convinces her boyfriend and business partner Pete Danner (Sam Elliott) to accompany her on the trip. After crashing on their motorcycle on a country road, they are invited to the palatial estate of a mysterious benefactor where a strange gathering begins to occur. But these seemingly unrelated events actually prove to be very much connected.
Cinema Cat: The feline film star in this movie is a beautiful and mysterious white cat with one blue eye and one green eye. The cat is present when different guests of the household are killed in unusual ways. The cat and the mansion’s resident Nurse Adams (Margaret Tyzack) are seen in the same vicinity but never together at the same time. Cue eerie music! The white cat is so important to the ambience of the film that she is even featured on the movie’s poster.
Cat Cattle Call: In one scene several cats are seen in the servants quarters just before Margaret enters the room and finds the servants there. Coincidence?
Kitty Carnage Warning! At one point Pete fights with the Nurse Adams and she falls down the stairs. When he and Margaret come down the stairs a short time later, it is the white cat we see lying at the bottom of the steps. Fortunately (we think) the cat turns out to be okay.
Final Mewsings: Cats make very loyal household servants.
