The Life of the Party (1930)

Directed by: Roy Del Ruth

Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: Flo (Winnie Lightner) and Dot (Irene Delroy) are two struggling women who decide to take up gold digging.

Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): Ending up in Havana, the girls meet up with Colonel Joy (Charles Butterworth), whose horse Thunder is about to run in a high stakes race. The Colonel explains to everyone how Thunder has a fear of black cats, and so his people have had every black cat in Havana drowned. Thankfully, not ALL the black cats were drowned, as owners of a rival horse manage to find one and bring it to the racetrack in a cage.

As the horses turn the corner, the men release the cat, tossing something ahead of the kitty to make him run out in front of the horses. With Flo filling in as a jockey riding Thunder, she is befuddled when the horse turns around and starts running in the opposite direction. Thankfully the cat scene was shot separately and the cat is never shown anywhere near the horses.

Final Mewsings: Anyone who would drown cats to win a horse race doesn’t deserve to win!
