Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Kate (Emma Thompson) and Richard (Pierce Brosnan) are a divorced couple who reunite for a crazy heist scheme to recoup their pension money stolen by a company takeover.
Cat Credit: An animated black cat is part of the opening credits.
Kitty Cameo: Kate owns a ginger tabby cat named Rumpus whom she affectionately calls Rumps.
Richard comes over to talk to Kate about their money being stolen and it turns out he is allergic to cats. He tosses a pillow at Rumpus which makes the cat run away.
As the film progresses, Kate’s neighbors Pen (Celia Imrie) and Jerry (Timothy Spall) are worried about her sudden absence (she has flown to Paris with Richard on a whim) and are looking through the window at how much food Rumpus has out while the cat is heard meowing. At the end of the film when Kate and Richard set out to travel, Pen is feeding and petting Rumpus.
Cat Cattle Call: Kate and Richard come up with a scheme to steal a diamond from billionaire Vincent Kruger (Laurent Lafitte) who has given it to his fiancé Manon (Louise Bourgoin). Disguised as Texans, they break into Manon’s room at the chateau where the wedding is taking place. They are surprised to find the room filled with flowers (which Kate happens to be allergic to) and cats.
Trying very hard not to sneeze, Kate and Richard hide as Manon enters the room.
Throughout the scene in the room, many cats are present. There never seem to be quite as many as there were when they first break into the suite.
Manon remembers Kate from an earlier scene and is happy to see her. When she finds out Kate is allergic to flowers, Manon throws many of the vases out of the window. Kate introduces her to Richard and he explains he is allergic to cats but asks her not to throw them out the window as well.
When Vincent enters the room, the cats all hiss and one even lets out a Poor Cat Screech.
The cat actors were provided by Pierre Cadéac of Fauna & Films.
Final Mewsings: If you leave home, even on a spur of the moment trip, make sure someone is looking after your cat!
