Synopsis: Mystery writer Cornelius Leydon (Peter Lorre) investigates the mysterious murder of a criminal whose body washes up from the Bosphorus.
Kitty Cameos: In one scene Leydon visits a man named Wladislaw Grudek (Victor Francen). As he is waiting in a comfortable room in Grudek’s home he spots two Siamese cats sitting on a divan nearby.
Leydon crosses over and then stoops down to pet the cats.
When Grudek enters he is happy to see Leydon petting the cats. He introduces them as Eloisa and Abelard (after the pair from the famous poem) and then picks up Eloisa before setting her back by Abelard, saying, “Go back to your lover now.”
Final Mewsings: Cats are poetic in and of themselves.
