Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser), an American with the French Foreign Legion joins an archeological expedition headed by librarian Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) which ends up unleashing an ancient curse.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): After accidentally unleashing the mummy, the group ends up at Fort Brydon. Rick is anxious for them to leave and starts throwing things into a suitcase. A white cat is sitting on the other side of the suitcase and Evelyn snatches the cat away just as Rick throws open the lid.
Evelyn sets the cat down and it runs away.
Later when the mummy, Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) shows up and starts going for Evelyn, they hear some discordant notes playing on a piano. The white cat is walking across the keys. Imhotep reacts with horror and evaporates.
As it turns out, cats are guardians of the underworld and they are told that Imhotep he will fear felines until he is fully regenerated. When Imhotep sneaks into Evelyn’s room and kisses her, Rick barges in and announces, “Look what I got!” holding up the white cat.
Imhotep screams and again evaporates. While not named in the film, the cat’s name in the original novel was Cleo.
Final Mewsings: Cats don’t tolerate the undead.
