Walt Disney Pictures
Starring: Bob Newhart, Eva Gabor, John McIntire, Michelle Stacy
Directed by: John Lounsbery, Wolfgang Reitherman and Art Stevens
Synopsis: When a little girl named Penny (voiced by Michelle Stacy) is kidnapped, the Rescue Aid Society send two of their agents, Bernard (voiced by Bob Newhart) and Miss Bianca (voiced by Eva Gabor) to her rescue. But can these two heroic mice rescue Penny from the villainous hands of Madame Medusa (voiced by Geraldine Page)?
Featured Feline: When Bernard and Miss Bianca visit the Morningside Orphanage where Penny lived to look for clues they meet an elderly cat named Rufus. Rufus recalls Penny, telling the mice about the last time her saw the little girl.
Penny was upset because she hadn’t been picked for adoption by a couple, but Rufus had lifted her spirits, pointing out that she was a special little girl and that she must have faith that things would work out. Rufus also recollects that a strange woman tried to give Penny a ride in her car, which leads the mice to Madame Medusa. Rufus only has a short amount of screen time but it’s one of the most sweet and endearing segments of the film. It’s interesting to note that Rufus’ caricature was based on veteran Disney animator Ollie Johnston.
Final Mewsings: Cats are a great comfort in our darkest hours.
