The Sheriff (1971)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: David Lowell Rich

Synopsis: In this made-for-TV movie, James Lucas (Ossie Davis) is a small town sheriff who faces the ugly reality of racism when a particularly nasty white insurance man Larry Walters (Ross Martin) lies to avoid being prosecuted for raping black co-ed Janet Wilder (Brenda Sykes).

Purr Blurs: Janet is sitting outside reading and gets up to refill the cats’ bowl. A little black cat is by the dish but runs toward the house when she takes the dish.

After Walters drives up he makes small talk with Janet, becoming more and more creepy by the minute. A ginger tabby cat emerges from the porch behind the nervous girl.

During their initial discussion, a white cat also appears and joins the ginger cat at the refilled dish. This is the last we see of the cats.

Final Mewsings: Cats can’t stand bigots or violence.
