Synopsis: A screen adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play. Alva Starr (Natalie Wood) lives in a dilapidated southern railroad town’s boarding house with her domineering mother (Kate Reid) and younger sister (Mary Badham). Alva’s mother has no problem promising her daughter to rich prospective gentlemen to better their situation, but when railroad official Owen Legate (Robert Redford) arrives in town Alva begins to realize she needs to take steps to make her life her own.
Purr Blurs: In one scene Alva takes Owen to an abandoned railroad car named after her. As they enter the car we see a tabby cat jump from one bank of seats across the aisle to the other and then disappear.
Later in New Orleans, Owen and Alva are rushing to meet each other after Owen gets off work. On the sidewalk where they meet a black and white cat is standing and scurries for cover between the bars of an iron gate as Owen and Alva embrace. The cat then ventures out onto the sidewalk again as they turn and walk away.
Final Mewsings: Amorous couples make cats run!
