Starring: Claudette Colbert, Orson Welles, George Brent
Directed by: Irving Pichel
Synopsis: Elizabeth Hamilton (Claudette Colbert) is devastated to learn that her husband John (Orson Welles) has been killed at the end of the first World War. Her employer, Lawrence Hamilton (George Brent) takes care of her and eventually they marry, not realizing that John is actually still alive.
Kitty Cameo: When Elizabeth gets the news about her husband being killed in action Lawrence takes her to the estate of his Aunt Jessica (Lucile Watson). One scene opens with Elizabeth resting. In the foreground a white angora cat named Florence is walking across a bed and then jumps down to the floor. The cat has a ribbon around her neck.
Aunt Jessica is sitting to one side knitting quietly. The cat starts to sniff at the ball of yarn on the floor.
Lawrence knocks and Aunt Jessica gets up to let him in. A moment later there is a crashing sound and we see a couple of the fireplace pokers have been knocked down and the cat is sitting by them. Aunt Jessica scolds the cat, explaining to Elizabeth “It’s only Florence behaving like a little kitten instead of a fat old cat.”
Final Mewsings: Even fat old cats get bored and want to have some fun!
