Toto, Vittorio e la dottoressa (1957)

by Linda Kay

Also Known As: Totò, Vittorio and the Doctor; The Lady Doctor

Directed by: Camillo Mastrocinque

Synopsis: Inept wanna-be detectives Mike Spillone (played by Italian comedian Totò) and Johnny (Agostino Salvietti) are hired to investigate the fidelity of female doctor Brigitte (Abbe Lane) which leads to numerous misunderstandings and a fair amount of comedic bumbling.

Cat Cattle Call: Near the end of the film the detectives have infiltrated the hospital where Brigitte works with Johnny posing as a patient and Mike as a doctor. This works well until a group of other physicians diagnose Johnny as having appendicitis and inform Mike that he must operate immediately. Continuing with the ruse, Mike starts sharpening two large knives over Johnny when he hears meowing coming from outside the operating room. Going to investigate, Mike discovers a group of cats waiting outside the door. Mike asks the cats, “What do you want?” and then informs them, “I haven’t even started yet!” (the implication being that Mike is basically a butcher and the cats are waiting for scraps).
