Synopsis: Soft-hearted army deserter (Lyndon Brook) murders his wife (Jane Hylton) because she sold their 2-year old son for 20 quid. 5 years later, he has reinvented himself as a successful businessman under a new name, Douglas Baines, but is haunted by the memory of his missing child, who is symbolized in a cheap toy which may be his undoing.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): The morning after the murder, Mr. Hendricks (Martin Miller), the irritable superintendent of the rundown rooming house where the deserter lived with his wife, bustles out to the front stoop to pick up bottles of milk, shooing away a tentative tuxedo cat, which settles on a lower step to await a more advantageous time to poach the provender.
