Where the North Begins (1923)

Directed by: Chester M. Franklin

Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: The Dog (Rin Tin Tin), a German Shepherd raised by a wolfpack in the Canadian wilds, rescues wounded trapper Gabrielle Dupree (Walter McGrail) from a frozen death, and performs several amazing feats of derring-do, eventually saving the day and vanquishing the nasty but resilient bad guy Shad Galloway (Pat Hartigan). But the heart of the movie is the bond which grows between dog and man, and later the man’s fiancée Felice McTavish (Claire Adams), a bond which is shattered when Gabrielle breaks faith with the heartbroken dog. To his credit, Gabrielle goes to great lengths to earn the forgiveness of his loyal four-legged friend, but will The Dog be able to trust again?

Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): While the industrious Felice is knitting some type of garment, her long-haired white cat is shown to be hopelessly entangled in a mass of yarn. It’s clear some prop man got a little out of control in preparing the poor cat for the shot, wrapping the poor animal beyond all reason.

Later, Felice and her cat are sitting before the fireplace, pining for the return of Gabrielle. After this the Dog moves in and the cat is never seen again.

Final Mewsings: If you were wrapped in yarn and forgotten for a dog you’d disappear, too!
