Wide Boy (1953)

by Mark Murton

Directed by: Ken Hughes

Synopsis: Small time London petty criminal Benny (Sydney Tafler) gets in over his head when an opportunist act of thievery presents him with the chance to blackmail a distinguished surgeon, Robert Manning (Colin Tapley).

Purr Blurs: Having discovered a compromising letter in the purse he stole, Benny arranges for the return of the letter in exchange for £200 to be left in an abandoned building at night. Manning drops off the money as arranged and Benny is about to leave when he spies a bobby on the beat and stays out of sight until the policeman has passed. As Benny watches the departing PC a black cat approaches the policeman and cries at him as though trying to tell him something.
