English Title: As Tears Go By
In-Gear Film Production
Starring: Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung, Jacky Cheung
Directed by: Kar Wai Wong
Synopsis: The story of a mid-level triad member named Wah (Andy Lau) who is constantly having to protect and defend his underling, the hot-tempered and very unpredictable Fly (Jacky Cheung). When Wah’s cousin Ngor (Maggie Cheung) comes to visit him in Hong Kong he is so taken with her he even considers quitting his gangster lifestyle.
Kitty Carnage Warning! After Fly is beaten up by some rival triad members, Wah seeks them out looking for vengeance. When he finds them, the nasty brute of the bunch is torturing a poor cat.
He grabs the cat by the scruff and is pouring beer down its throat. Which makes Wah’s following vengeance that much sweeter.
It’s safe to assume that Hong Kong filmmaking didn’t have any restrictions against animal cruelty in their movies (seeing as there were few rules regulating human safety) but in the next moment the cat is thrown off the table and into some people. The action happens so quickly it’s impossible to tell if it’s still the real cat but we have to asume it is.
And this isn’t the only time an animal is coerced into getting stoned in the movie. Later in the film Wah and Fly are seen blowing marijuana smoke into dog’s faces.
Final Mewsings: Substance abuse shouldn’t be forced upon animals.
