The Embezzler (1954)

by Mark Murton

Directed by: John Gilling

Synopsis: Enjoyable British ‘B’ feature with Charles Victor as Henry Paulson, a quiet, respectable, henpecked, elderly bank cashier who learns that he has only a couple of years left to live and so decides to embezzle money from the bank where he works and enjoy the rest of his days in South America. But things don’t quite go to plan . . . .

Kitty Cameo: At the start of the film we see Henry amiably going through his morning routine while his wife nags at him from her bed. Having delivered her morning tea and newspaper, Henry descends the stairs then stops and turns around as his wife shouts “Did you let the cat out?” Glancing at the tuxedo cat coming down the stairs behind him Henry simply replies “Yes, dear,” and carries on his way without even leaving the door open long enough to possibly allow the cat to exit.
