Look at Life: “Rendered Safe” (1962)

Synopsis: A look at the brave men and engineers who dismantle and render safe unexploded ordinance in Britain after World War II.

Reality Cat: The cameras enter the Sussex headquarters of the Bomb Disposal Unit of the Royal Engineers. A group of military men are touring the facilities of the Joint Services School where various types of bombs are on display. In addition to these are examples of the latest types of guided missiles. As the men look at a missile launcher, a tortoiseshell kitten stands atop the loaded projectiles.

The narrator explains, “Like the unit’s kitten, bomb disposal men must be familiar with every type of new weapon.” One of the engineers makes a point to reach up and pet the kitty, who seems right at home amongst the machines.
