Cat lovers will be excited to hear about the new television series debuting on Fox tonight, January 3rd, at 8:00 p.m. Call Me Kat stars Mayim Bialik as a 39 year old woman who leaves her job to open a cat café. It is based on a British sitcom called Miranda, although in that version the lead owns a joke shop.
Expect to see several Cat Burglars (Scene Stealers) on the café set where the cat actors are being given permission to adlib. Linda Hunt, the new series’ creator, stated in an article for TV Insider that if the cats are in a certain place during recording then magically move to another place then that’s fine. “We’re not going to worry about cat continuity.”
It’s wonderful to see so many cat actors gainfully employed during the COVID pandemic and rest assured they are also being protected. Mayim explained that the human actors are not allowed to touch the cats unless it is called for in a specific scene.
The show is also working to promote the animal sanctuary called The Best Friends Animal Society which rescues animals and is working toward a No-Kill future for all animals. This is a natural fit, since many of the people working on Call Me Kat are cat lovers.
Co-star Leslie Jordan has reportedly fostered kittens in need. He shared his love of cats in a video in which he cooes over a kitten in a Best Friends perfume commercial parody (the original video is below with Jordan’s reactions following):
Linda Hunt has also rescued cats. And series star Mayim Bialik has worked with Best Friends for several years. She also recorded a message for the organization:
We hope the series will be a success, as having a weekly show featuring cats would be a great start to 2021!
