Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: On his 21st birthday, in front of his family, Max (David Krumholtz) tries to hang himself. It’s his eighth suicide attempt, seeking a peaceful white light. Sent to an asylum, it’s love at first for Max when he meets fellow suicidal inmate Grace (Natasha Lyonne) and he determines to give her a reason to live, which might just do the same for him.
CGI Cat: In the opening scene, as his parents try and coax him down from the chandelier where he’s trying to hang himself, Max muses that, “It wasn’t that my parents were so bad, but just like everything else they seem like aliens to me.” At this point he looks down at the family cat whose CGI head and neck stretch up to him and speaks in his mother’s voice, saying, “You heard your mother, Max!”
Towards the end of the film, Max returns home with Grace and their new baby and as the family sit at the dinning table he looks towards the cat whose cartoon head recedes back to normal.
Purr Blur: Max declares, “I finally saw things the way they are, and not distorted or warped.” He looks towards the cat again who is now a normal gray and white tuxedo kitty. Despite only appearing in this single shot as herself, the cat actor, Zora, does get a name check in the end credits cast list.
Final Mewsings: Cats are not quite that elastic!
