Daffy Rents (1966)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: Robert McKimson

Synopsis: Daffy Duck is hired by the curator of the El Casa del Gato, Rest Home for Neurotic Cats, to capture Speedy Gonzales with a robot after the quick rodent comes to town and makes the local kitties crazy.

Cartoon Cats: As the short opens, we see the outside of the cat mental hospital. Two men are carrying a ginger tabby cat into the facility on a stretcher, discussing how the local cats go crazy around this time of year when Speedy Gonzales vacations in Sonora. The ginger cat lies spaced out then convulses several times, yelling, “Zoom!” and “Andele!” and “Arriba!”

We then see a ward with numerous beds all filled with shaking cats. The cats suddenly look up, startled, then shoot to the ceiling and cling there as Speedy comes running into the room.

Final Mewsings: If cartoon cats were smart they would never chase cartoon mice. It never ends well for them.
