Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: A boy, whose nickname is Mochuelo, or Owl (José Antonio Mejías), prepares to leave his small Spanish village for school in the big city, spending the last days of summer with his friends Tiñoso (Jesús Crespo) and Moñigo (Ángel Díaz).

Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): The boys visit a general store run by an older woman named Lola (Julia Caba Alba). Tiñoso pauses outside the shop’s window to meow at the white and tabby cat sitting inside. Once inside, the boys ask for crackers and specify the ones the cat is sitting next to in the window. The cat is mentioned by Lola a couple of times throughout the movie.

Kitty Carnage Warning! In a later scene, however, Tiñoso has a magnifying glass which he has used to light a cigarette for Mochuelo. When Mochuelo spots the cat in the window, he motions for the other two boys to join him and Tiñoso focuses the magnifying glass on the cat’s tail. The boys watch and giggle as smoke starts to appear. The cat starts to run all around the window and then darts out. Lola is quick to run outside and scold the boys and they are later punished by the schoolmaster. It would appear some kind of smoke device was used in this scene and the cat did not appear to actually be on fire or in any pain, thank goodness.
