Forces’ Sweetheart (1953)

by Mark Murton

Directed by: Maclean Rogers

Synopsis: In this unsophisticated comedy, forces’ sweetheart Judy James (Hy Hazell), having just returned from entertaining troops in Korea is now rehearsing for a new West End show and has to contend with various admirers showing up at the hotel where she is staying in the hope of meeting her.

Purr Blur: Among those vying for Ms James’s affections is lovelorn amiable idiot Private Llewelyn (Harry Secombe) who having been initially rebuffed by the hotel concierge (Graham Stark) steals a great coat and bearskin hat from the cloakroom and approaches the check-in desk again. The concierge quickly sees through his disguise and orders him out of the hotel. Momentarily distracted from his place, the concierge returns to see a patch of black fur sticking up behind the desk. Assuming it is Llewelyn back again he leaps on the shape and pushes it down behind the counter, only to re-emerge moments later wrestling with a black cat which he deposits on the counter before the startled kitty immediately jumps to the floor.
