Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: MontrĂ©al Detective Sergeant Jim Henderson’s (Christopher Plummer) investigation into the mysterious death of prostitute Elizabeth Lucy (Karen Black) leads him to believe there was a Satantic element to the tragedy.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): Brothel madame Meg (Yvette Brind’amour) owns a black cat who sits in a basket on her desk.

Severe Kitty Carnage Warning! The movie jumps back and forth in time between the events leading up to Elizabeth’s death and Henderson’s investigation. Jumping forward in time again, Henderson enters Meg’s apartment and finds her black cat stabbed with a knife and pinned to the inside of the apartment door.
In another scene which flashes to the past, Elizabeth goes to the roof of Meg’s apartment and finds her potting plants with the cat beside her on the table.

When one of the men who have come for Elizabeth shows up the cat seems to want to bolt but seems to be tethered to the table.

The cat appears again in Meg’s arms as she drugs Elizabeth for the night’s festivities.

We are treated to a close up of the cat in the basket looking startled.

Another version of this shot is repeated as Elizabeth suffers hallucinations after having been drugged.

Final Mewsings: We don’t think even Satanists want to see black cats killed!
Many thanks to Mark Murton and Ted Davis for letting me know about the cat in this film.
