Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Married reporters, played by real-life couple Bebe Daniels (billed The Liberty Girl) and Ben Lyon (billed Her Other Half), working for rival New York radio networks, engage in cut-throat competition to get the best scoop.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): Having overslept and missed a story, Ben and his assistant Vic Oliver (billed The Nuisance with the ideas) are chewed out by their boss and when they return to the apartment Vic notices the cat, Tiddles, still fast asleep.
“What am I supposed to do about it?” demands Ben, “Speak in whispers?” before Vic goes on to conclude that as all three of them had drunk milk the night before Bebe must have doped it. Ben isn’t convinced until Tiddles rolls over slowly and then lethargically jumps from the chair to the floor (achieved by slowing down the film).
Kitty Cameo: Later in the film, hoping to beat Bebe to another exclusive by getting to Britain before she can, Ben and Vic stowaway on one of the ferry bombers that fly to Britain each day. Starting to feel the altitude they inhale from some conveniently placed oxygen bottles and promptly pass out. Coming round again they realise there’s no sound from the engines. Thinking the plane might be gliding, Ben instructs Vic to look out of the hatch. Looking back at him is a small tabby cat.
“Can you see anything?” asks Ben. “Yes,” replies Vic, “a flying cat!” At which point they realise they’ve actually landed.
Final Mewsings: Cats can help ground you.
