Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some MAJOR spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: In this Tamil language production, Professor John ‘JD’ Durairaj (Thalapathy Vijay) loves trashing bad guys despite often being in an alcoholic stupor. But things change when he is assigned to a criminal juvenile facility where reality hits hard and something must be done to save the boys from an evil overlord named Bhavani (Vijay Sethupathi).
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): JD owns a cream colored Persian cat who is seen several times throughout the film, mostly in JD’s apartment. Often the cat is blurry or in the background of a shot.
JD interacts with the cat in brief moments, such as when the cat is on top of his covers in bed or when JD dances with the cat under his arm.
When JD moves to his new accomodations after being transferred, the cat sits in his carrier. “You don’t like this place?” JD asks the kitty.
The cat is eating some dry food as JD is passed out on the couch, missing a desperate call for help from two of the boys at the school.
The next morning the police wake up JD, also waking up the cat.
They ask JD to come with them and for some reason he brings the cat along.
At the school JD carries his cat from the car into the building as everyone stands around.
Once inside the building, JD is met with a horrific sight. The boys have been killed and hung from the ceiling. JD drops the cat in shock and the kitty scurries away.
This is the event which shakes JD up enough to get his act together and drop the booze. The cat is not seen at JD’s home any more and no mention is ever made of what happens to the kitty once JD gets sober. But apparently the cat is sent to live at the home of JD’s friend Sanjeev (Sanheev Venkat) and his family and is seen with them in one late scene as JD calls all of his friends and acquaintances to warn them of impending danger.
The cat garnered some attention and interest in Persian cats. We could not find the name of the cat actor or any further information about him or her. But we did find publicity photos and posters (both actual and photoshopped) featuring the cat prominently.
Actor Vijay Sethupathi also held a Persian cat in a recent photoshoot which many speculated was the same cat actor, although this cat appears to be ginger and not cream in color.
Final Mewsings: Cats need to stop disappearing with no explanation partway through movies!
Many thanks to Ann for letting us know about the cat in this film.
