Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: George (Cary Grant) and Anne Rose (Betsy Drake) are a couple with three children living happily in a home which is always open to wayward animals. When Anne visits an orphanage she learns about the foster care system to find homes for older children with problems and her heart goes out to them. They take in a troubled girl named Jane (Iris Mann) and open their arms and hearts to her.
Cat Burglars (Scene Stealers): Early in the film we see George at home with his children, Tim (Malcolm Cassell), Trot (Gay Gordon) and Teenie (George Winslow). George is making Teenie’s birthday cake while Tim is supervising the birth a cat’s kittens under the stove. Trot brings a huge basket and Tim hands the kittens out to his father. Every time the mother cat (whom we never see) gives birth to another kitten she meows. Needless to say she meows a lot! The kittens are absolutely adorable.
Later when Jane prepares to return to the orphanage after her trial two weeks with the Rose family is up, Teenie offers her one of the kittens to take with her. She holds the kitten for a moment then gives it back, pointing out that it may not be allowed wherever she ends up. It’s a very touching scene overall.
Cat Cattle Call: Still later, the family is in the kitchen preparing for a camping trip and Anne pours a saucer of milk and opens the door to the outside, calling for the kittens. The kittens are now grown into a large group of cats, and the cats can be seen off and on throughout the film. Even when the family vacations at the beach there are several cats in and around the beach house with them (although it isn’t exactly clear if they brought the crowder of cats with them from home or if they just attract another group of cats at that location, too.)
Final Mewsings: There’s always room for more cats!
