Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Psychotherapist Ruben Brandt (voiced by Iván Kamarás) is haunted by famous paintings which leads his notorious larcenous patients to steal them for him.
Cartoon Cats: Some notable animated cats appear in this unique film, as well as some fleeting ones, all drawn in artistic styles reminiscent of great paintings. One of the paintings that haunts Brandt is Olympia by Édouard Manet of a nude woman lying on a bed with a black cat while her servant brings flowers. Brandt is tortured by the painting and when he sees it in person he imagines the cat leaping out and attacking him.
When the thieves present him with the painting, he eyes the cat but his fears are conquered.
Two other cats have notable appearances. One is a gray cat who climbs into a window and onto some books as detective Mike Kowalsky (voiced by Zalán Makranczi) enters a home. Another is a gray and white cat who eyes Kowalsky knowingly from a parked car across the street.
Kowalsky eventually figures out what is causing Brandt’s adverse reaction to the classic paintings.
Early in the film a woman is trying to feed some stray cats something when one of the thieves named Mimi (voiced by Gabriella Hámori) careens into them with her car while being chased by Kowalsky.
There are so many other cartoon cat cameos in this film and to explain too much about it is to spoil the fun. Needless to say this is a clever movie well worth watching and for cat spotting! See if you can find all these kitties in the film itself!
Final Mewsings: Cats don’t know art but they know what they look like.
