Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: A taxi dancer named Mercedes (Rosie Perez) has dreams of becoming a famous actress, while a young man named Emilio (Michael DeLorenzo) longs to be with Mercedes.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): In one scene Emilio waits out back of the dance club for Mercedes to exit. He picks up an orange tabby kitten from an abandoned car and holds it close.
When Mercedes comes out, Emilio walks alongside her, carrying the kitten. When he says it’s for her, she says, “I don’t want a cat. I mean, I don’t even have any money.” At the same time some drunks have followed Mercedes out of the club and start harrasing Emilio. He hands the kitten to Mercedes and gets into a fight with the men. Mercedes places the kitten in her car.
Oddly enough the kitten doesn’t show up again until late in the next scene at Mercedes’ apartment after she recreates a scene from a show her friend had performed. As Mercedes lies “dead” on the floor, the kitten comes up and sniffs around her.
As Mercedes and Emilio talk, Mercedes carries the kitten around with her, petting it.
The kitten only turns up one more time in an unforgettable moment when Mercedes is at home doing a facial when her phone rings. As she gets up to answer it the cat jumps off the table where the phone is sitting (apparently the ring startled the poor thing) and then leaps onto some containers and up the wall before falling back down and running away.
Final Mewsings: Kittens know how to pad their parts!
