The Ghost Comes Home (1940)

Directed by: William Thiele

Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: Henpecked family man Vern Adams (Frank Morgan) is presumed lost at sea then surprises everyone by turning up alive.

Cat Burglars (Scene Stealers): Vern owns a pet shop and the opening scene finds him receiving a mail-order penguin. When his wife Cora (Billie Burke) protests, saying he can’t even sell cats and dogs let alone a penguin, Vern points out that he did sell a dog that day for one hundred dollars. When asked if he was paid in cash Vern admits that the customer was short and ended up traded two fifty dollar cats for the dog. Vern, Cora and their daughter Billie (Ann Rutherford) look down to see two adorable tabby kittens in a cage on the floor. After Cora storms out, Billie sneers at the animals, saying “Alley cats!”

The cats (or two other cats) are only seen one more time in a cage in the background. There may be more cats in the cages in this scene but it is hard to tell.

Final Mewsings: Trading two cats for a dog sounds like a good deal to us!
