by Ted Davis
Directed by: Frank Tuttle
Synopsis: Coolheaded and competent Ed Beaumont (George Raft), friend and right hand man to Paul Madvig (Edward Arnold), the powerful and vaguely unscrupulous political boss of a large 1930s metropolis, will go to any extremes to promote Madvig’s political and romantic ambitions, the latter of which center on Janet Henry (Claire Dodd), spoiled and pretty daughter of Senator John T. Henry (Charles Richman), even to the extent of enduring savage beatings administered by the sadistic lowbrow Jeff (Guinn Williams), a criminal thug in the employ of rival gangster Shad O’Rory (Robert Gleckler).
Purr Blur: In the dead of night, a black cat crosses the path of Ed Beaumont, scant moments before he discovers the corpse of Taylor Henry (Ray Milland), Janet’s adored brother, on a lonely city street.
Final Mewsings: Black cats have nothing to do with the run of bad luck experienced by the people in this movie.
