Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains spoilers for this episode!
Synopsis: Doug (Kevin James) surprises Carrie (Leah Remini) with a weekend at an upstate bed and breakfast which turns out to be more creepy than quaint.
Cat Cattle Call: When Doug and Carrie arrive at The Sugar Creek Bed and Breakfast they notice the front sitting room is full of both cats and cat knick knacks. There are four cats sitting around. “Lot of kitty cats,” Carrie notices with some trepidation.
Featured Feline: Innkeeper Betty (Carol Mansell) introduces herself and asks Doug to sign in. Almost immediately a ginger tabby jumps up on the book and makes it difficult for Doug to sign. This cat turns out to be named Marmalade.
Marmalade sits on the dining room table with Doug, Carrie, Betty and her husband Ed (Jim Haynie) as they eat dinner.
Betty notes that Marmalade likes Doug because he looks very much like their son Ed, Jr. who they don’t talk about since he left.
Having heard about a Hyatt hotel up the street, Doug and Carrie sneak out of the bed and breakfast while Betty is sleeping. Marmalade sits on the couch with Betty and watches the couple trying to escape.
Doug and Carrie are making their way through the woods when they hear a jingling behind them. They turn to find Marmalade following them. In the distance Betty and Ed are calling for Marmalade while looking with flashlights.
Carrie bolts through a small pond while Doug falls down an embankment and gets left behind. Marmalade arrives on the bank and looks at Doug.
When Betty and Ed catch up, Doug is holding Marmalade. “Found him!” Doug says, covering his escape attempt.
Kitty Cameo: The next morning Betty gets Doug some buttered toast. A moment later she scolds a long-haired tabby cat with, “Mister Poops, for the last time stay out of the butter!” The cat is seen licking butter from a wrapper. Doug spits out the toast.
Carrie returns from a nice night at the Hyatt. Doug is upset at having been left behind and says he is staying there with Ed and Betty and Marmalade, “Because they like me for who I am!” He picks up and pets the cat.
Moments later, after finding a ham in the bathtub, their car is seen racing from the Inn, smashing into the everything on the way out. It stops on the road and the door opens and Doug drops Marmalade out onto the road. Marmalade sits and watches them drive away.
Marmalade is also present in the tag finale as Ed and Betty’s long-lost son Ed Jr. (also played by Kevin James) comes home.
Final Mewsings: If only all inns offered Marmalade!
