Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Based on the video game series. A street wise young man named Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) is recruited by veteran treasure hunter Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) to help him locate a long-lost stash of gold purportedly amassed by Ferdinand Magellan.
Cat Burglar (Scene Stealer): Once Nathan agrees to work with Sully, they need to break into an auction to steal a key that will help them recover the treasure. Nathan texts Sully and says he will need a nice suit, hand-held sheet metal cutters and a cat. These items are given to Nathan in Sully’s apartment and Sully asks why he needed the Snowshoe cat, who is sitting nearby. “She’s just for you,” Nathan explains, “Your life seemed super sad.”
As they walk out the door Sully complains, saying, “I’m not going to keep this thing!” Then to the cat he adds, “You’re gonna shit all over my floor!”
But in Barcelona, Sully mentions that he is actually worried about the cat, as the “man from the app” who promised to take care of the kitty hasn’t checked in with him yet.
After the start of the end credits there is a bonus scene which could be the opening of a sequel. Nathan is in trouble when confronting a bad guy whose henchmen have pulled their guns. Sully arrives with a gun of his own and they are backing out of the place. When Nathan points out to Sully that he expected him the day before, Sully explains that it takes special papers to get an animal on a plane. Sure enough it turns out that the cat is in Sully’s backpack. “I go everywhere with Mr. Whiskers,” Sully states.
We’re not quite sure when Mr. Whiskers changed sex, though, as Nathan clearly stated “She’s for you,” in the earlier scene.
Reports say that Mark Wahlberg was actually allergic to the cat actor and could only work with her for brief periods of time. Oddly enough, the cat’s surprise appearance at the end, one of the highlights of the movie, was included in previews for the film.
Final Mewsings: People who aren’t cat people have just never owned a cat.
