Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!
Synopsis: Jeff Cameron (Robert Mitchum) is a young doctor who falls in love with a suicidal patient named Margo (Faith Domergue) not realizing all of the dark baggage which is going to come along with their relationship.
Kitty Cameo: When Margo sends Jeff a telegram asking him to come to her home for an explanation, he arrives on her doorstep to find a Siamese cat. Jeff greets the cat by saying, “Hello, Kitty!” When the butler opens the door and invites Jeff inside, Jeff asks if the cat should come in as well. The butler explains the cat belongs to their neighbor and should not be let inside.
Later in the film Jeff returns to the house drunk and sees the same Siamese cat on the step. Once again he greets the cat and even plays with it for a moment with the rose he has brought.
When Margo opens the door the cat runs into the house. We don’t see the cat again but it is referred to later in the film when the police find a body inside the house sooner than they would have if the cat hadn’t been locked inside and mewing.
Interstingly enough, an article written about actress Faith Domergue to promote this film stated that she and her family owned a Siamese cat named Mish Mish which was a gift of cat fancier and fellow actor James Mason. Is it possible this could be Mish Mish making a cameo in this film? We may never know for sure!
Final Mewsings: I would hate to have to clean up the mess after both the murder and the cat that was locked in.
