Directed by: John Madden

Cat Out of the Bag Alert! This review contains some spoilers for this film!

Synopsis: Based on the novel by Edith Wharton. A preacher hears the story of Ethan Frome (Liam Neeson), a crippled farmer living in isolation with his sickly wife Zeena (Joan Allen).

Kitty Cameo: During the course of the story, Zeena’s relative Mattie (Patricia Arquette) comes to live with the couple to help. In one scene Mattie and Ethan are spending a night home together alone. Mattie has made dinner for then. A long-haired tabby cat runs across the floor at the beginning of the scene.

The cat almost trips up Mattie as it runs to the next room to jump up upon Zeena’s empty chair.

A short time later Ethan offers the cat a bite of a pastry made by Mattie.

This leads to disaster as the cat ends up jumping up on the table, breaking the pickle dish which is Zeena’s prized possession. The cat is not seen after this nor was it referenced earlier, although it can be heard meowing in the house off and on throughout the film.

Final Mewsings: Cats are more precious than pickle dishes.
