Shiver Me Timbers (1934)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: Dave Fleischer, Willard Bowsky

Synopsis: Popeye (voiced by William Costello), Olive Oyl (voiced by Mae Questel) and Wimpy (voiced by Charles Lawrence) come across a ghost ship and start to explore, only to be mercilessly taunted by the spiritual inhabitants.

Cartoon Cats: At one point the trio are captured by the ghosts. Popeye is set swinging on a rope, banging into the masts. Wimpy is chained just out of reach of a roast turkey with a galloping table constantly pulling it away from him. Olive Oyl is tied down to the deck with milk dripping on her feet. A ghost sets down two adorable black kitties who start licking her feet, torturing her with their tickling tongues.

As was typical of these shorts, a color version was reanimated for later television screenings. These were poor copies of the originals with much of the detail lost. In the colorized version the kitties were grey instead of black.

Final Mewsings: When it comes to torture by cats most of us would admit to being masochists.
