Synopsis: Stodgy mystery writer Ellery Queen (William Gargan) trails purported embezzler Norman Hadley (John Litel), but shifts priorities when the actual thief, George Belden (Noel Madison), is murdered, much to the satisfaction of that criminal’s brassy blonde showgirl wife Adele (Lilian Bond). Ellery’s dad, crusty and shrewd Inspector Queen (Charlie Grapewin), is more prominent than usual in the penultimate entry of the early 1940s movie series.
Kitty Cameo: After hanging out and wasting the time of the staff of The Golden Dragon Chop Suey Restaurant, Ellery calls for a waiter, but doesn’t get a response, so he barges into the kitchen and yells again, at which point a tuxedo cat wanders in through the open back door and announces his presence with a meow.
Final Mewsings: The cat was also calling for the waiter, but his purpose was to pick up his take-out order.
