Slayground (1983)

by Linda Kay

Directed by: Terry Bedford

Synopsis: Enigmatic thief with the single name of Stone (Peter Coyote) pulls off an armored car robbery with accomplices but things go wrong when their newly obtained getaway driver causes a car crash which kills a little girl. That girl’s father hires a hit man to take out the crooks, causing Stone to flee to London to avoid assassination. Poor adaptation of the Parker book by Richard Stark.

Kitty Cameo: While in London, Stone looks for his past cohort Terry and ends up asking his former girlfriend for his location. At first she insists Terry is dead but Stone eventually needles the truth from her. Unfortunately the hired killer, whose identity is concealed by a large brimmed hat, comes to call on her and sits menacingly in the dark, stroking her longhair blue point kitty reclining comfortably on the man’s lap. “I have this thing for cats,” he explains, “They come to me.”

The scene cuts to moments later when the spared kitty crosses the wet pavement outside the flat. The fate of the girl seems to be a given.
